Winter is quickly approaching in many parts of the US. Over the last month, I’ve been watching dustings of snow gather on the nearby mountain peaks here in Colorado. I’ve been feeling the chill in the air. I’ve
been daydreaming of admiring the pristine scenes of the beautiful, white Rockies. I’ve also been seeing incredible moon-rises, emerging from behind the mountains. So I sat down in the studio and put these fun impressions together and this little painting emerged.
This painting is inspired by the many years that I’ve spent in the mountains all across the United States. It is a tribute to countless sunsets that can’t really be captured in photos. I’ve compiled memories of my favorite moments where the mountains become layers of blue while the setting sun creates a bright, colorful expression in the above sky.
This painting was inspired by a moonrise that is lit up by the setting sun in the mountains, not any particular moonrise but many that I’ve enjoyed over the years. Most often, when it comes to one place, one set of mountains, I’ve seen the full moon rise from behind the Sangre de Cristo Mountains seen from the Mystic Valley Sculpture Park that I am building with my partner Kyle.
This painting is inspired by the countless mountain vistas that have propelled me to keep getting outside to enjoy time in the mountains. Often times the scenery can be so awe inspiring and so incredible that only the most skilled photographer will come remotely close to capturing that moment.
The hike up to Opal Lake is a local treasure. It is a gentle couple mile walk up through a beautiful forest which is perfect for our little family. The hike is short and easy but when you catch the landscape
under the right light, the views equal those of places that may require a more extraneous, longer hike.
This painting is inspired by the mountain view along the trail across the road from where I live in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. This is where I take my kids for little forest walks. Its a beautiful trail any time of the year. But anytime after it would snow, the snow covered pines are completely mesmerizing.

This painting is inspired by one of my trips to Glacier National Park. I’ve included the photo that I took of a lovely pastoral scene along one of the trails we enjoyed from the famous and beloved Going to the Sun Road which runs through this majestic park.
